Dr. Hempel grew up surrounded by the beautiful horse farms of Lexington, Kentucky. He played high school basketball and remains a life long fan of the UK Wildcats. Since moving to Atlanta in 1990, he and his wife Sarah have enjoyed living in the neighborhoods of Garden Hills, North Buckhead, and most recently Brookhaven. They have a son who was born in 1992 and a daughter born in 1994. Dr. Hempel’s son is a graduate of The Lovett School and currently attends the University of Georgia. His daughter attends Lovett. The family is a member of the Peachtree Road United Methodist Church.
Dr. Hempel’s hobbies include travel, photography, and as of recently, attempting to learn the French language. More than anything else, he and his wife have enjoyed participating in numerous activities with their children. These activities have included hosting international exchange students from England and France, attending a music competition at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, and spending countless hours attending school plays and athletic events including high school varsity swimming, volleyball, and track. Through his children, Dr. Hempel has become familiar with organizations such as Dynamo Swim Club, TopHat soccer, TCA and Volley Performance club volleyball, YMCA Camp High Harbour, Overland Outdoor Adventures, and Junior Diplomat.
Dr. Hempel enjoys seeing children and adolescents of all ages as patients in the office and sharing the knowledge he has gained from both his practice experience and the experience of raising his own children on a broad range of topics. On a typical day he may describe what it is like to balance club sports practices with academics and then share advice with a high school student about the college search process. In addition to taking care of the medical illnesses at hand, he also loves to share a quick story about a favorite travel destination or a new local restaurant. One of his greatest blessings has been the opportunity to spend his entire career working along side his friends Dr. Harbaugh and Dr. Cox, whom he met during his residency training at Wake Forest.
