Dr. Hempel grew up surrounded by the beautiful horse farms of Lexington, Kentucky. He played high school basketball and remains a lifelong fan of the UK Wildcats. He and his wife Sarah have lived in the Brookhaven neighborhood of Atlanta for many years and are members of the Capital City Club and the Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. Sarah works as a pharmacist at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at their Egleston hospital facility. Both their son Sam and daughter Hannah graduated from The Lovett School. Sam graduated from college at the University of Georgia and is now pursuing his PhD in Finance at Cornell University. Hannah is a senior at UGA majoring in Exercise Physiology and wants to pursue a future career as a health care provider. Dr. Hempel has enjoyed serving on the UGA Parents Council while his children have been students.
Dr. Hempel enjoys the opportunity to share the experiences that he has had from raising his children with his patients and their families. Over the years the Hempel family has hosted foreign exchange students from England, France, and China, attended a high school music competition at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, and spent countless hours attending varsity swimming, track, and volleyball events. Attending YMCA Camp High Harbor was always a summer tradition. Dr. Hempel’s high school and college student patients are always happy to hear about Sam’s study abroad programs where he played jazz concerts around Italy and took classes at the London School of Economics. They are even happier to hear about Hannah’s experiences as a student of the Semester at Sea program, during which she took classes on a cruise ship with 600 other college students while visiting 15 countries including Russia, Morocco, and Cuba.
Stories like these can really make the adolescent office visit more fun, while parents appreciate that they can help motivate their students to do their best in school.
Dr. Hempel also serves as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics for the Georgia Regents University-University of Georgia Partnership, and through this role enjoys hosting MD, PA, and PNP students on rotations at the Johns Creek office. GRU, formerly known as the Medical College of Georgia, is the state’s flagship public institution for training future medical providers. Dr. Hempel enjoys travel, photography, and exploring everything that Atlanta’s in-town neighborhoods have to offer, such as the Beltline Trail, Krog Street Market, and Ponce City Market.
Dr. Hempel enjoys seeing patients of all ages in the office. He loves the day-to-day interactions with patient families, and is always happy to share a quick travel tip or new restaurant recommendation. He really loves speaking with families about their own experiences, especially since so many come to us from different countries and cultures around the world. One of his greatest blessings has been the opportunity to spend his entire career working along side his friends Dr. Harbaugh and Dr. Cox, who he met during his residency at Wake Forest University.
